Overview

Material Inventory Center Handler

 

ROLE:  Perform all functions as a material handler and inventory control including loading and unloading trucks, use of the SAM Tracks warehouse management system. Properly stacking pallets, cardboard and discarding waste. Consistently meeting or exceeding established standards for quality, reliability and customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Work cohesively as a member of the Material Handling Division of Packaging to insure good production and efficiency are maintained.
  • Consistently use proper handling and safety techniques while loading, staging or transferring loads to various parts of the department.
  • Operate forklifts and pallet jacks safely and efficiently throughout the production environment.
  • Execute in a timely and efficient manner the basic procedures for moving loads to the racks, inserters, collator, waste trailer or compactors.
  • Load finished product, set-up the inserters or collator, receive, stage, replenish product as needed and use the SAM Tracks system to track inventory through the production process including inventory searches to locate product in our racks or on the Packaging production floor.
  • To complete the receipt, documentation and storage of all insert and consumable materials arriving in the Packaging Department.
  • Remove waste from the production floor and warehouse, maintain appropriate housekeeping.
  • Monitor and document the quantity and quality of all materials received.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Manager.

Qualifications

  • Requires a high school diploma or GED; plus 5 years warehouse and/or print packaging experience.
  • Must possess good communication skills and be able to interact effectively with a diverse workforce.
  • Requires sound decision-making and problem-solving capabilities and the ability to work independently with little supervision.
  • Must have an in-depth knowledge of packaging operations and overall knowledge of the newspaper production process.
  • Must be certified and highly skilled in the operation of industrial forklift trucks and Pallet Jacks.
  • Must be detail oriented and manage priorities effectively in a high volume, deadline oriented environment.
  • The ability to distinguish audible sounds and visual signals in order to walk about safely in close proximity to heavy industrial equipment is required.
  • Working environment requires exposure to high noise levels and paper dust.
  • Must be able to stand continuously, walk and bend frequently and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Has daily interaction with packaging supervisors and circulation and advertising managers and representatives.
  • Frequent contact with advertising customers, printers and delivery companies.
