To manage the activities of the Packaging Department to ensure that all company goals related to quality, reliability, productivity and customer service are met.
Supervise production in the Packaging Department so that productivity, reliability and product quality meet or exceed planned objectives and communicate to the Packaging Sr. Operations Manager all issues that may affect planned results.
Jointly oversee production of daily and Sunday inserted packages with other supervisors and managers, ensuring that both quality and reliability standards are maintained
Insure the efficient and effective handling of all preprinted products while maintaining both quality and reliability standards.
Maximize productivity and reliability by managing production to established plan.
Communicate with management on all issues that may impact productivity.
Establish a positive working environment and high level of morale by providing leadership, open communication and feedback
Participate in the short and long-range strategic planning process and contribute to the development of the annual financial budget for the department.
Utilize performance management techniques, including performance tracking, coaching and evaluating performance using established standards of performance. Provide employee training as needed.
Responsible for recruiting and hiring the hourly staff of employees in the Packaging Department in accordance with company guidelines to insure adequate staffing is maintained and control all hours worked within budgetary guidelines.
Prepare and implement development plans for direct reports to insure continued technical and management skills improvement and succession planning.
Insure environment is optimal for employee communication, involvement and satisfaction as well as safe and clean working conditions.
Monitor individual and room trends to insure employee issues are addressed. Communicate as needed with higher-level management on these issues.
Adhere to department policies and procedures, including but not limited to standards of performance as well as policies regarding attendance, safety, overtime, substance abuse, housekeeping, forklift operation, etc.
Participate on work teams for special projects as directed by the Packaging Sr. Operations Manager.
Supervise testing, analysis, selection and the implementation process for capital equipment, including that equipment tests are conducted consistently and accurately with sufficient documentation gathered both before and after equipment selection to insure effective implementation of new technology.
Perform other duties as determined by the Packaging Sr. Operations Manager
Related experience with a minimum of 7 years experience in a Newspaper Packaging production environment and 5 years in a supervisory capacity.
Must possess sound written and verbal communication skills
Must be able to interact effectively with a diverse workforce.
Requires good management, leadership and motivational skills in addition to solid interpersonal and organizational abilities.
Must be capable of developing and controlling departmental budgets and be proficient in operating a personal computer for tracking and projecting.
The ability to distinguish audible sounds and visual signals in order to walk about safely in close proximity to heavy industrial equipment is required.
Must have working knowledge of Mueller Martini SLS Inserting Equipment
Must be willing to work various shifts, weekends and holidays
