Overview

Under minimal supervision the Maintenance Team Leader plans, coordinates, and oversees a variety of technical and administrative activities related to the efficient day-to-day operation of a specialized team of electricians, machinists and technicians servicing and maintaining the production equipment in the Deerfield printing facility on a 24-hour 365-day basis.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise one of three shifts of electricians and machinists to achieve maximum utilization of the facility.
  • Foster a positive, productive and cooperative environment between the electricians and machinists within the department and the operators and supervisors of other departments.
  • Demonstrate good organizational, problem solving, team-building and management skills as a mature force for change and continuous improvement.
  • Periodically redesign the maintenance organization to serve the growing needs of the Sun-Sentinel Operations Division from a team based orientation to help our internal customers achieve peak performance.
  • Follow up to see that problems and complaints are satisfactorily resolved.  Establish and implement short and long range goals and objectives.
  • Establish job requirements for electricians and machinists. Review resumes, contact and interview job applicants and recommend individuals for hiring consideration to the department manager.
  • Keep records on employees and periodically evaluate members of the maintenance department, write annual performance appraisals and motivate employees to achieve peak productivity and performance. Recommend individuals for PRIDE awards, promotions, transfers, corrective action or dismissal consideration to the department manager.
  • Periodically review the departments’ workload, schedules and personnel assignments for planning purposes. Hire and or work overtime when necessary.  Assigns specific duties to personnel daily. Approve (or disapproves) leave requests, evaluate personnel performance and initiate disciplinary actions.
  • In the case of a major enhancement act as project manager and handle all phases of the installation new press equipment.
  • Supervise and coordinate the activities of the Hurricane Coverage Team. Provide overall technical leadership for all maintenance and CAR improvement programs Develop, coordinate and manage a preventative maintenance program to reduce down time of presses. Ensure all employees adhere to the zero tolerance harassment policy.
  • Assign or delegate responsibility for specified work to members of the maintenance crew.  Give work direction, resolve problem, prepare schedules and set deadlines to ensure timely completion of work.
  • Perform administrative duties having a significant impact on the overall mission of the maintenance department.
  • Ability to analyze, compare and interpret facts and make sound judgements based upon this knowledge. 

Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have vocational technical school training with a specialty in either precision machining and welding or industrial electronics and electrical theory.
  • Must have a minimum of seven years experience as an electrician or machinist in a newspaper or printing equipment manufacturer or related industrial experience.
  • Must have three years of supervisory experience and have demonstrated strong supervisory and interpersonal skills.

Must have a broad and diverse range of technical knowledge and experience in electrical, mechanical, hydraulics, and pneumatics. Must have good people skills in leadership, coaching, and teambuilding to strengthen and cultivate relationships. Must be able to lift objects up to 50 pounds,  Must be able to oversee the multi-craft activities involved in preventive, scheduled, and emergency maintenance and repair of equipment. Must be able to make decisions and stick to them. Must be able to read schematics, blueprints and technical manuals.
